Earthquake: Causes, Effects, and Safety Measures

Introduction

An earthquake is a natural disaster caused by the sudden movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. It results in seismic waves that can shake the ground, causing damage to infrastructure, landslides, and tsunamis in some cases.

Causes of Earthquakes

  1. Tectonic Movements – Most earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates along fault lines.

  2. Volcanic Activity – Some earthquakes are triggered by volcanic eruptions.

  3. Human Activities – Activities like mining, reservoir-induced seismicity, and nuclear explosions can also lead to earthquakes.

Effects of Earthquakes

  • Ground Shaking – Causes buildings and bridges to collapse.

  • Surface Rupture – Cracks may appear on roads, bridges, and structures

Safety Measures

  • Before an Earthquake: Secure heavy furniture, have an emergency kit, and create an evacuation plan.

  • During an Earthquake: Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Stay away from windows and objects that can fall
